Schools of Psychoanalysis according IPA

The organization of personality is the commun issue of all psychoanalytical developments: the psyche functioning based on the permanent interaction between Nature (biological, instinctive) and Nurture (environmental or socio-cultural). Some authors place greater emphasis on constitucionals factors others on environmental ones and still others on the complementarity.

 

Main Schools of Psychoanalysis are:

  • Sigmund Freud ( 1856-1939)- Founder. “Freudian school
  • Anna Freud (1895-1982)- Freudian or classicism. “Ego psychology school
  • Melanie Klein ( 1882-1960)- “Object relation school
  • Donald Winnicott (1896-1971)- Winnicottian. “Middle or independent school
  • Alfred Bion (1897-1979)- “Bionnian school“-postkleinian
  • Jacques Lacan (1901-1981)- Structuralist. “French school
  • Heinz Kohut (1913-1981)- “Self Psychology school“. Positivism. Self and narcissism
